Help Us Rewrite Our Story.

Pickens, Mississippi is in the second poorest county in the United States.

Our local elementary children have an unacceptable 43% reading rate.

The Town of Pickens, Mississippi, is located in the southeast corner of Holmes County, the second poorest county in the United States, and is situated on the Big Black River. It began as a ferry point over the river and as a trading post. Today, Pickens serves as a commercial area for the surrounding rural community, with a Dollar General and The Pickens Post Office.

The Pickens Public Library, likewise, serves the greater surrounding rural area and the town of Pickens. Most importantly, the Library helps serve the children of the Goodman Pickens Elementary School, which has a 43% reading rate. It provides the only public access to computers and the internet, a meeting place for the citizens, and a point of distribution of information.

The time is NOW! Failure is not an option for our children and families. Please join us in this important mission.

Why Is This Need So Important?

It all began in 2014 with a landmark church building graciously donated by the First United Methodist Church on the one condition that it would be converted into a center of community life and library.

By converting it into a center of community life as a library, it would provide the children and citizens in this rural area with opportunities and a vital connection to the world, while still serving as a central landmark in the area. The former church building has a kitchen, and this area could be used for nutritional programs and other events. The upstairs rooms could be used for training, advice, and assistance to the greater community. This project will provide the children and families of this systemically underserved rural area hope, opportunities and a vital vision of and connection to the world.

The Friends of the Pickens Public Library (FPPL) humbly ask for your donations, advocacy, ideas, and your connections to make this important storybook dream come true for the schoolchildren and community of Pickens.

You can make your donation online through the Community Foundation For Mississippi website.

Project Support and Updates

We have had the pro bono services of an architect, Mike McBride, who has done the initial drawings of the building.

The Friends of the Pickens Public Library hired Belinda Stewart Architects, PA to inspect and to write a report on the building outlining the necessary work for renovating the building. Maggie Bjorgum is the lead architect. We have finished phase 1 and are now beginning phase 2 of our plan.

FPPL is in partnership with and has the support of both the Town of Pickens, Mississippi and the Mid-Mississippi Regional Library System (MMRLS.) Our contact with MMRLS is Josh Haidet, Executive Director. Mr. Haidet is supportive of this project. They have set the requirements for the building to meet their standards.

What Does The Pickens Public Library mean to the community? Hear from the Librarian and a few patrons themselves!

With few resources, our deserving community needs this development to overcome the lingering vestiges of slavery, Jim Crow, and poverty. Friends of the Pickens Public Library has enthusiastic community and State support, but we need more.

The Friends of the Pickens Public Library (Friends of Mississippi Library Inc.) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to actively creating and supporting programs to raise the profile of the Pickens Public Library. The FPPL and the Pickens Public Library are both very active in the community and strive for enriching the area through education, reading and other learning activities.

Our Programs Are Essential to Pickens and Its Community.

FPPL started a Books for Africa project where each year we invite high school students to come and pack up books to be sent to Africa, in addition to participating each year in the statewide Library Week, providing a buffet lunch and a guest speaker, as well as having someone from the Holmes County Health Department who provides information on hypertension and blood pressure.

We actively promote the Mississippi Book Festival, even offering to pay the cost of bussing students to the event. Also, we have funded an after-school program, an arts program, and support events offered by the MMRLS at the library. At these events, we are attracting on average around 30 children.

In past summers, the building was used for a children’s program and a food program, which were highly successful. The building has a kitchen, and this area could be used for nutritional programs and our events. There are rooms upstairs which could be used for training, advice, and assistance to the greater community.
